Minor Bathtub Repairs Can Be Done

It is very easy to do your own home repairs if you set your mind to it. One of the most overused parts of the house is the bathroom, specifically the bathtub. The first aspect you have to decide on is what you want to do with your bathtub. Do you want to replace the entire tub? Do you want to keep your tub but make it look like new or do you want to just fix whatever it is that is wrong right now. Of course, before deciding you have to check your budget. Do you have a budget for it?

One of the ways by which you can save with bathtub repairs is by doing it yourself. I have to warn you though, if your option is number 1 wherein you want to replace the entire tub, well you have to have some kind of experience when it comes to plumbing, carpentry and tiling. It is not going to be easy but you can do it. However, if you decide to just fix your old tub you can do it too. It can go as high as $200 not bad considering that it may cost you around $3000 to replace your old one. There are actually bathtub repair kits that you can purchase for DIY projects. I have to warn you though that you may not get the same shade of color to match your bathtub unless of course you use professional refinishing bathtub repair products.

The most important thing before you do your own bathtub repairs is your confidence. Make sure you have a lot of it so you will be able to finish what you have started.

Repairing a Hole in Drywall

I received a call this week from my church’s office manager saying we needed to have some repairs made before a visit from the building inspectors next week. One of the repairs was a hole in the drywall where a door handle had punched through the wall. The doorstop had broken and next thing you know there’s a repair job for the Go-To Guy.

Knowing how to do a patch like this is handy even when you’re not repairing damage. The first time I did one was when I installed phone and cable television service into an older home that my parents had purchased. My brother and I cut holes at the top and bottom of the wall to fish through the new wire, and then I patched up the holes and repainted and you’d never know the wall had been repaired. The same goes for running a new electrical wire or anything else that requires getting inside the wall.

If you don’t already know, a typical wall is mostly air. It is either 2×4 wood studs or metal studs that are placed every 16 inches on-center (when building walls you measure from the center of each stud and not the edges.) The surface is covered with drywall (a gypsum board covered with a heavy layer of paper) which is screwed or nailed to the studs. It’s quick to build and looks great, but can be easily damaged – especially when the builder uses 1/4 inch thick drywall instead of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch (these are the standard thicknesses.)

When you have a damaged wall you need to replace the broken area with new drywall and then patch the seams and paint.

The supplies you’ll need for this project are:

  • Drywall Saw
  • Utility Knife
  • Drywall piece large enough to fill the hole
  • 1×3 inch Lumber or pieces of Scrap Plywood for supports
  • Drywall Screws
  • Joint Compound
  • Mesh Fiberglass Drywall Tape
  • 6 inch or larger Spreader
  • Fine Grit Sand Paper or Drywall Sanding Screen
  • Drill with Drywall Bit

All of these supplies can be found at your local home center in the construction materials area near the drywall. If you have a small patch, they may give you a scrap of drywall so you won’t have to buy a full sheet. There are usually plenty of scraps laying around in various thicknesses.

Here’s the step-by-step process:

  • Cut a hole larger than the damaged area. Make the corners of the cut as square as possible to make it easier to cut the replacement patch. Use a drywall saw cut the hole
  • Cut several pieces of 1×3 inch wood or plywood scraps that are several inches taller than the hole. Place them in the wall near the edges of the hole and use drywall screws to secure the wood to the exisiting wall. (Tighten the screws until the heads are slightly below the surface but don’t completely tear through the paper. A drywall bit for your drill is designed to prevent overtightening. It’s not essetial, but recommended.) The point here is to create a good solid surface to attach the patch too. If you have a large opening you can put an additional support in the center.
  • Using a utility knife, cut a new patch piece that is slightly smaller than the hole. (To cut drywall, cut the paper on the finished side and then bend the board backward until the gypsum ’snaps.’ You’ll want to support the back along the cut so it breaks evenly. Once it has snapped, use the utility knife to cut the paper on the back.)
  • Insert the patch into the opening and securely attach it to the supports you installed using drywall screws. One screw at the top and bottom of each support should be sufficent. (Don’t put the screws too close to the edges or the gypsum will crumble.)
  • Now that the hole is filled you need to cover the seams. Apply fiberglass mesh tape over the seams. (The joint compound used to fill the seams is not strong and will crack if not reinforced.)
  • The last step is applying joint compound to the seams with a wide spreading knife Spread the joint compound over the screw holes and tape creating the smoothest surface you can. Don’t get too fussy at this stage. Just get it close. Let this dry overnight and then put on one more light coat. After this coat dries, smooth out any surface bumps with a light sanding.

Your wall is repaired, good as new. Put a coat of wall primer over the patch to seal the surface and then paint it to match the rest of the wall. It’s important to put on the primer, because raw drywall and joint compound, when painted, will dull the finish of the paint and give away your patch job.

Before you tackle your next home repair project, take a moment to ensure that the products on your shelf are safe to use. Every year, scores of homeowners and consumers are injured or killed because they unknowingly use products that have been recalled by the manufacturer and/or the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Such recall efforts are often ineffective and go largely unnoticed, until it is too late.

You may search the Internet for instructions on how to perform your home repair, but do you check to see if the unused products in your home are still safe? When you buy a new product, you would hope that the store has removed recalled products from their shelves. When buying product new to the market, it is a good idea to search the internet for information about hazards or problems experienced by other consumers. Manufacturer recalls are routinely issued through product safety alerts and recall notices on TV, radio, newspaper and Internet websites, as well as the CPSC’s website. Be proactive about keeping yourself appraised of product safety issues.

Tile Perfect Stand ‘N Seal Tile Grout Sealer is a good example of a product that can pose a health danger to consumers. The product was recalled in August 2005 due to the product’s odor not being chemically pungent enough to force consumers to minimize their exposure to fumes. Individuals who have suffered from overexposure have sought medical attention for coughing, irritation, breathing difficulty, dizziness and disorientation. There are even reports of death from the product. And while the recalled units were to be pulled from Home Depot shelves in August 2005, many consumers were able to purchase the product after the recall date. While this product has been recalled, many homeowners may still have this product on their workshop shelves and could sustain serious injuries if they use the remaining contents. If you have this aerosol product, do not use it. Return it to the Home Depot, for a full refund.

Be Proactive and Stay Informed. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) website (www.cpsc.gov) provides information on more than 15,000 types of consumer products that present unreasonable risks of serious injury and death. They also list over 4,000 product recalls and recall alerts. Watch for recall notices in stores such as Home Depot and Lowes to stay informed. Before you begin your next home repair project with that unused home repair product, take an extra minute to protect your health by checking for product recalls.

Cash, Krugler and Fredericks, LLC is an Atlanta personal injury law firm representing consumers around the country who have been injured by products such as Tile Perfect – Stand ‘N Seal Grout Sealer. Injured consumers may have claims not only against the manufacturer, but also against The Home Depot, the Atlanta-based company exclusively selling Stand ‘N Seal. For more information on the Tile Perfect Stand ‘N Seal Product Recall [http://www.ckandf.com/tileperfect_sealgrout.php] and other product liability lawsuits visit Cash, Krugler & Fredericks online.

When approaching home repair, there are many jobs that a handy person can do themselves. Doing your own work assures that the job is done correctly and to your specifications. Most every home improvement business can answer any questions that you may have and they will probably also have any “How-to” booklets that you may need.

But before taking on a task such as replacing cabinets, shutters, railings, columns, doors or door surrounds, floors or floorboards, or anything else in need of repair or replacement, you will need the proper tools. When purchasing tools, buy only what you will need for your first project. Try not to suffer from illusions of grandeur. If you decide that you want to do this on a regular basis, you will eventually have a nice set of home repair and improvement tools. Buy quality tools-you don’t want to spend money on the same tools over and over.

The following is a list of starter tools that will come in handy:

  • Hand Tools - hand saw, sturdy hammer, a set of adjustable wrenches, a utility knife, a set of screwdrivers, a set of pliers, C-clamp, level, files, vise, putty knife, brushes-wire and paint, and a chisel, a universal staple gun, and a caulking gun.
  • Power Tools - circular saw, a jig saw, a reciprocating saw, an electric drill and drill bits, an electric sander.
  • Hardware - assortment of nails and screws, hinges, door and cabinet hardware, screw hooks, and brads.
  • Supplies - assortment of sandpaper, spackling compound, duct tape, steel measuring tape, all-purpose and wood glue, caulk, paint and primer, and mortar.

A few tips to live by when working on your home:

  • Start Small - As excited as you and your family might be, don’t attempt large projects right off of the bat. Doing this will save you time and money in the long run. If you have never been a do-it-yourself person, tackling a large job may put you on the fast-track of “I just want to get this done!” thinking. Starting small and learning and making strides will give you a sense of accomplishment and an enthusiasm to tackle a bigger project.
  • Tackle ONE Project at a Time - Sometimes this is difficult to do, but try to keep projects to a minimum. Taking on too much can become overwhelming and you might have a tendency to throw your hands in the air with so much to do. You should try to enjoy do-it-yourself home improvement. Finishing one project before starting another one will make you feel better about working on your own home.
  • Don’t Perform Any Task That You Are Not Completely Comfortable With - Let’s face it, you may be smart but that doesn’t mean that you can do everything. Some jobs require the help of a professional-that may be a specialized contractor or an architect.

Following these simple guidelines should get you well on your way to do-it-yourself home improvement. Remember to put safety first and learn something from every project.

Types of Home Repair Every Homeowner Should Be Aware Of

Many responsibilities come with be a homeowner. Not only are you financially responsible to support your home but you’re also responsible for the upkeep, aesthetics and overall maintenance of every aspect of your home, its structure and your yard.

Unexpected problems can cause significant stress – especially if you’re already struggling to make ends meet. When it comes to owning a home, there are 4 areas of home repair every homeowner should be aware of. If something breaks, you should have knowledge on the subject so you can take appropriate precautions to fix the problem.

Below are 4 areas of home repair every homeowner should become abreast of:

Plumbing Repairs. Plumbing problems can be some of the most expensive things to fix – especially if you don’t know a professional plumber who can help fix your problem for free. Plumbing repairs include anything from pipe leaks to toilets that won’t flush to sinks that won’t drain.

Electrical Repairs. Electrical repairs can be costly, depending on the specific problem. If you’ve encountered a small problem with broken appliances, it might not be as big of a deal as it would be if you’re experiencing difficulties with the electrical wiring of your home. Talk to a professional about what the problem is and the best steps to take to fix it.

Heating Repairs. Every homeowner has probably faced heating problems in the home. Whether you’re dealing with furnace problems or fireplace problems, heating challenges are important issues to address – especially for individuals and families in colder climates. Likewise, air conditioning problems should be addressed immediately for homeowners living in warmer climates.

Window Repair. Window repair can also be costly, depending on the extent of the damage. If you’re simply repairing one or two windows in your home, overall costs should be minimal (under a few hundred dollars). On the other hand, if you have to replace all of the windows in your home, it can end up costing you a lot more (we’re talking thousands). It’s important to make sure your windows are in good condition and functional – especially if you plan to resell your home in the future.

It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen in your home. If you’re fortunate enough to live in the same home for years without having to make any major repairs then you’re extremely lucky. If we could leave you with a piece of advice, it would be this: If something is broke, don’t fix it. But if something is broke, fix it as soon as possible. Waiting will only make things worse and will end up costing you more money in the end.

We hope our tips have helped!

The Basic Home Repair Tool Kit – Part Four

Chisels, Utility Knives, Planers, Putty Knives and Scrapers

The home repair tool kit is a lot different from what it used to be. When I was younger, there were no power tools in my father’s vast array of tools. The brace-and-bit and folding wooden rule have gone. Now, everything needs to be plugged in or recharged. Not a bad thing at all, but not being a carpenter, like my father and his father before him, I wonder how mobile power tools make the professional carpenter.

However, the jobs to be done remain the same and the rule for buying tools remains the same, buy the best you can afford. So, let’s take a look at a few modern tools that would make up a very well-equipped set of tools.

Chisels: generally speaking, you will need a basic set of four chisels: quarter, half, three-quarters and one full inch in width. The are used for fine work or places where a saw can’t get. If you need to cut across the wood’s grain make a shallow cut at either end of work area, otherwise the chisel will rip the wood too far. The cuts act as barriers – cut off points. Tap the chisel with a wooden or plastic mallet to preserve your chisels (or the side of a hammer, if you must). Chisels are sold sharp, but sharpen them up again.

Pro Tip: buy or make a cloth wallet to keep them in to protect the sharp edge. Beware of buried nails!

Utility Knives: or, in the UK, Stanley knives are razor sharp. Most are retractable now for safety reasons. The blades come with two sharp edges, so when it becomes blunt, unscrew the handle and reverse the blade. Spare blades are kept in the handle too. Use the knife for any use you need, the blade is tough and versatile. Cut vinyl, linoleum, plastic, almost anything.

Pro Tip: NEVER just toss the knife into your bag. Put it in and make certain that the blade has been retracted. Millions of professionals have cut their hands on open blades while rummaging in their toolbags.

Planes: the plane is used for planning wood. It is for fine work and the blade has to be sharpened regularly. There is also a power planer, which makes short work of stripping thin layers of wood off, say, a slightly over-size door.

Putty Knives: a putty knife is a tool with a very flexible blunt blade for spreading putty on widows or adhesive on walls. These latter knives are often 12″ wide, window putty knives are 1″ wide. Make sure you clean them thoroughly after use.

Pro Tip: if you forget to clean the knife after use, rub it clean on coarse sandpaper.

Scrapers: scrapers are made for removing old paint from timber, but they are versatile. A blunt scraper is virtually useless, so keep it sharp with some sandpaper or wet-and-dry. Most decorators find the 1.5″ scraper the most useful although non-decorators usually buy the 3″ scraper. If you keep it sharp, you have to be careful of two things: leaving it in your bag when not in use, as for utility knives above and, when in use, that you don’t drive the scraper into the wood you are scraping, especially if it’s an old, slightly rotten window frame.

Window Replacements Reno NV | ...

If you have any problems with wood beams or posts that need to be repaired and these structural framing components are holding up large areas of your home, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to contact a professional instead of repairing them on your own. Just a little something to think about, especially if you don’t know very much, about home construction and framing.

If you have a wood beam or post that is damaged and needs to be repaired and it can be done safely and efficiently, then feel free to tackle the job. However, and I’m stressing this lot in this article, you shouldn’t do any repairs that you don’t know anything about. This would include any types of wood beams or wood posts that are major structural components of your home framing system.

In the past, when I did a lot of work for other general contractors and builders, they would contact me to do some of the more difficult structural beam and post repairs. It wasn’t that these people weren’t capable of doing them, most of them were simply afraid to tackle a project like this.

If professionals in the construction business are afraid to tackle some post and beam repairs, you should be also. Make sure that you don’t ever repair something that you’re not comfortable with and if it’s holding up a large section of your house, you should think twice before proceeding with this type of repair.

Structural post and beam repairs should only be made by professionals who understand house framing and house construction methods.

Home Repair – 5 Tips to Find a Home Repair Company

Do you have a Home Repair that you want completed? Finding an affordable and quality company or contractor to do your home improvement repairs can be easy if you know what to look for. These 5 tips will quickly show you important traits to look for before choosing the contractor or company to do your home repairs.

1. Make sure you find out if the contractor is licensed and bonded to complete the home improvements that you are needing finished. An example would be if you lived in San Antonio, TX. In this case you would want a licensed San Antonio Home Repair expert not a Houston licensed repair contractor. Basic stuff, but important, to help cover your home in the event a problem occurs during the home improvement project.

2. What type of handyman services does this contractor perform? Home repairs can range from large to very small projects so having a home improvement company who provides many services is an advantage. These repair jobs may require a few skills to complete so having a well rounded handyman can save you money.

3. What type of experience does this particular construction contractor have? Have they been doing home services and building repairs for at least 5 years? Make sure to ask about references for jobs they have completed that are similar to your home project.

4. Be sure to get a written guarantee for all work completed! This could easily save you hundreds and maybe thousands down the road. If the business doesn’t provide a guarantee then go find a company or contractor who will.

5. How competitive is the pricing of the company when considering how good the workmanship is? Well if you have a company who can beat all prices and does a poor job you still lose! Make sure to see some before and after photos of their past jobs and then talk about pricing. Cheaper is not always better.

Going back over these 5 tips and really keeping things in mind like experience, skills, and services provided can help you choose the best Home Repair expert or contractor in your area. Remember cheaper service may not be the best quality so see some past photos before deciding.
